Where the coast meets the capital
The lie of the land
Kerala's capital wears its history lightly: a gold-crowned temple at the heart of the old city, royal palaces of carved teak, and a museum quarter set in botanic gardens. Beyond the avenues, the coast unspools into crescent coves at Kovalam, laterite cliffs at Varkala, and misted tea country up at Ponmudi.
A capital that keeps its gold indoors and lets the coast do the shining.
The essentials
01Temple
The city takes its name from this shrine to Vishnu reclining on the serpent Anantha, its seven-tiered Dravidian gopuram mirrored in the temple tank at dawn. Its vaults famously hold one of the richest temple treasuries ever recorded.
02Beach
Three crescent coves divided by rocky promontories, watched over by a red-and-white lighthouse on Kurumkal hill. Kerala's original beach resort still earns its reputation at sunset, when the fishing fleet rows home through amber light.
03Museum
An 1880 Indo-Saracenic confection of striped brick and gabled roofs, filled with bronzes, ivory carvings and Kathakali regalia. The neighbouring Kanakakkunnu Palace and its lawns host the city's music and arts seasons.

HeritageThe 'Mansion of Horses', named for the 122 wooden steeds carved beneath its eaves, was built by the composer-king Swathi Thirunal beside the temple. Its cool teak interiors hold royal portraits, crystal thrones and musical instruments.
IslandWhere the Neyyar river meets the sea, a golden sandbar separates still estuary water from surf. Boats thread mangrove channels past floating cottages to a beach reachable only by water.
BeachRust-red laterite cliffs drop straight to Papanasam beach, a rare piece of high coast on Kerala's flat shoreline. The clifftop path strings together cafes and yoga porches above waters Hindus have long held sacred.
Hill stationA ribbon of 22 hairpin bends climbs to this 'golden peak' in the Western Ghats, about 55 km from the city. Tea gardens, rolling mist and the Golden Valley's mountain streams reward the drive.
WildlifeA reservoir spread beneath the Agasthyamala hills, with boat safaris, a lion safari park and crocodile rehabilitation centre along its shores. The sanctuary's evergreen forests climb toward some of the peninsula's richest biodiversity.
BeachThe city's own evening shore, close to the airport runway, where families gather for sunset and the sculpted mermaid 'Jalakanyaka' reclines in concrete. The arattu processions of Padmanabhaswamy Temple end here in the sea.
TrekA permit-only two-day trek climbs to this 1,868 m peak sacred to the sage Agastya, through forest dense with rare medicinal plants. From the summit the Ghats fall away to both the Arabian Sea and the Tamil plains.
