Land of letters, latex and lakes
The lie of the land
The first town in India to reach full literacy sits between Vembanad Lake and the rubber-clad foothills of the Ghats. Kumarakom's bird-filled lakeshore drew the backwater resort era into being, while inland roads climb through plantations to waterfalls and the bare rock spire of Illikkal Kallu.
First the whole town learned to read; the lake has been telling stories ever since.

01Wildlife
Fourteen acres of mangrove and swamp on the eastern shore of Vembanad, alive with egrets, herons, cormorants and darters. Between November and February, migratory flocks — Siberian visitors among them — fill the waterline.
02Backwaters
India's longest lake spreads a silver horizon along the district's western edge, shared with Alappuzha and Ernakulam. From Kumarakom's jetties, sunset cruises slide out among fishing canoes and resort houseboats.
03Temple
One of Kerala's oldest Shiva shrines, its vast walled compound and copper-clad sanctum anchoring the temple town of Vaikom. The 1924 Vaikom Satyagraha, fought here for temple-road access, marks it in India's civil-rights history.

ViewpointA bare monolith rising to about 1,100 metres in the Western Ghats, its summit path crossing a narrow saddle known as the Narakapalam, or bridge of hell. On clear evenings the view runs west across the whole district to the backwaters.
WaterfallA stream drops in stages through rubber plantations near Kumarakom, loudest in the months after the rains. The walk in — down plantation paths under latex-tapping trees — is half the pleasure.
MuseumA singular collection of sea-sculpted driftwood gathered over decades in the Andamans and worked into natural sculpture. Guided tours by its founder-curator give the pieces their stories.
TempleThis ancient Shiva temple guards some of Kerala's finest murals, including the celebrated Nataraja in dancing fury on its gopuram wall. Its festival parades seven and a half golden elephants — ezharaponnana — before the deity.
ChurchA serene Syro-Malabar church on the Meenachil river, home to the tomb of St. Alphonsa, India's first canonised woman saint. Pilgrims arrive year-round, and in numbers each July for her feast.
CountrysideThe hills east of town carry the plantations that made Kottayam India's rubber capital, latex cups clipped to every trunk. Plantation walks and estate bungalows open this working landscape to visitors.
