The lie of the land
Canals thread straight through town and out into a maze of lakes and paddy fields that lie below sea level — this is the heartland of the Kerala backwaters. Kettuvallam houseboats drift past toddy shops and church spires, and every August a hundred rowers to a boat thunder down Punnamada Lake.
Here the road gives up, and the water agrees to carry you.
The essentials
01Backwaters
Converted rice barges of thatch and jackwood drift through a lattice of canals, lagoons and lakes at walking pace. A night aboard — Kuttanadan fish curry, lamplight, absolute stillness — remains Kerala's defining experience.
02Festival
On the second Saturday of August, chundan vallams over 30 metres long race down Punnamada Lake, each driven by more than a hundred rowers chanting in rhythm. First raced for Nehru in 1952, it is the backwaters' grandest spectacle.
03Beach
The skeletal iron pier reaching into the surf recalls the town's era as a busy coir-trading port. Broad sands, an old lighthouse nearby and reliable sunsets keep the shore in daily use.

CountrysideOne of the few places on earth where rice is farmed below sea level, behind dykes that hold the backwaters at bay. Village lanes run atop the bunds, with green paddy on one side and boat traffic on the other.
BeachA long, uncrowded stretch of sand backed by coconut groves and a working fishing village at Mararikulam. It offers the coast at its most unhurried, a short drive from the houseboat jetties.
IslandThe 'sands of midnight', a small uninhabited island in Vembanad Lake reachable only by boat. Its trees and marshes shelter cormorants, egrets and, in season, migratory birds from far beyond the subcontinent.
TempleA classic Kerala-style temple famed for palpayasam, the sweet milk porridge served daily as offering since the shrine's founding. Legend ties the recipe to a debt owed Krishna himself, counted in grains of rice on a chessboard.
MuseumA private collection built by a coir-baron family, holding one of Asia's largest assemblies of Swarovski crystal alongside ivory, porcelain and Tanjore paintings. Its galleries trace the taste of Alleppey's trading age.
HeritageAn 18th-century Travancore palace at Kayamkulam, built in pure Kerala style with gabled roofs and narrow stairs. Inside hangs the Gajendra Moksham, one of the largest single mural panels found in the state.
