The granary and the gap
The lie of the land
Where the Western Ghats break open at the Palakkad Gap, wind pours through turbine-lined ridges onto Kerala's widest rice plains. Tipu Sultan's laterite fort holds the town centre, while the district's edges rise into some of India's most pristine forest — Silent Valley and the tiger country of Parambikulam.

The essentials
01Fort
Hyder Ali raised this square laterite fort in 1766 to command the gap between the Malabar coast and Mysore; the British took and rebuilt it two decades later. Its moated ramparts now enclose one of Kerala's best-kept historic precincts.
02Dam
Kerala's largest reservoir spreads beneath the Nelliyampathy foothills, fronted by terraced gardens, a ropeway and the sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman's monumental Yakshi. It has been the district's picnic ground since the 1950s.
03Hill station
Hairpins climb from the plains to tea, coffee and orange estates at over 1,000 metres, with viewpoints like Seetharkundu looking back over the entire gap. Mist and plantation quiet make it Palakkad's high retreat.

WildlifeA rainforest so undisturbed it became the emblem of India's conservation movement when a dam here was refused in the 1980s. Its evergreen canopy shelters lion-tailed macaques and a river, the Kunthi, that has never run through a settlement.
WildlifeBetween the Anamalai and Nelliyampathy ranges, Parambikulam runs guided safaris and tribal-led treks through forest that holds tigers, elephant herds and one of the world's oldest teak trees, the vast Kannimara.
WaterfallA forest trek of about three kilometres from the Dhoni reserve gate ends at this hill stream falling through boulders below a working farm plateau. It runs best from the monsoon into early winter.
HeritageKerala's first designated heritage village, an agraharam of Tamil Brahmin row houses beside the Kalpathy river, settled in the 15th century. Each November its car festival draws temple chariots through the narrow streets.
Hill stationA high valley of the Bhavani river beneath the sacred peak of Malleeswaran, home to the Irula, Muduga and Kurumba communities. Its dry-shadow landscape, rare in Kerala, feels closer to the Deccan than the coast.
CountrysideThe gap funnels steady wind across the district's eastern ridges, and turbine files at Kanjikode and beyond have become a landscape in their own right. At golden hour the blades turn slowly over palmyra and paddy.
